Theidea,conceivedbyJ.S.Morton,thenamemberoftheNebraskaStateBoardofAgriculture,wasoneofforestconservation.Itwasamovetopromotereplanting,followingdeforestation,andtoplantuptreelessareas.TheideahassPadwidelytootherlandswhereitisvariouslycelebratedasthe'FestivalofTrees','eningWeek'ofJapan,'TheNewYear'sDaysofTrees'inIsrael,'TheTree-lovingWeek'ofKorea,'TheReforestationWeek'ofYugoslavia,'TheStudents'AfforestationDay'ofIcelandand'TheNationalFestivalofTreePlanting'inIndia.ArborDayinitsvariousformsisnowrecognisedinmorethanfiftycountries.
